Trigger Entry Strategies

Every way FSTrading actually enters a trade

FSTrading doesn't trade off one signal. Once a candidate has already been through the scanning, analysis and watching stages covered on the How It Works page and is armed, it's checked against every trigger strategy below, on every tick, in a fixed priority order — the first strategy whose conditions are actually met is the one that places the trade, never more than one per candidate.

8 strategies, checked in priority order

Each strategy below is built around a different way a stock actually starts moving. They're listed in the exact order FSTrading checks them — the most selective, timing-sensitive patterns first, the broadest catch-all last — so a candidate that qualifies for a more specific setup is never entered on the generic one instead.

1. Refined Breakout

Fresh breakouts, not stale ones

Triggers the moment price breaks above a known resistance level — but only in the earliest stretch of that move, so it favors a breakout that's still happening over one that already ran. Requires volume to be accelerating and the spread to stay tight, filtering out breakouts on thin, choppy order books.

2. Opening Range Breakout

First 5 minutes of the session

Some stocks — recent IPOs especially — don't have a meaningful price history to build a resistance level from. This strategy uses the high of the first five minutes of the session as its reference line instead, and triggers when price breaks above it on rising volume.

3. VWAP Reclaim

The second leg of a move

Watches for a stock that dipped meaningfully below its volume-weighted average price and is now reclaiming it on renewed volume — a shakeout followed by a resume. The stop for this one tracks VWAP itself rather than a flat percentage, since VWAP holding as support is the entire thesis.

4. Momentum Breakout

The original breakout, no ceiling

The most straightforward strategy: price clears a resistance level with volume accelerating and spread in check. Unlike Refined Breakout, there's no cap on how far past resistance price already is, which makes this one broader but less selective about timing.

5. Breakout Pullback

Breakout, pullback, reclaim

Waits through a full three-part pattern: an initial breakout, a pullback that gives back no more than half of that move, then a reclaim of the pullback high with volume and momentum returning. The stop sits just below the pullback low.

6. Ignition Pullback

Pullback off a volume surge

The same pullback-then-reclaim structure as Breakout Pullback, but it doesn't need a resistance level to work from — it anchors to any stock showing a genuine volume "ignition" instead, so it can catch setups that don't have an obvious chart level yet.

7. Volatility Contraction Breakout

The flag / pennant pattern

Looks for the classic flag or pennant: a stock that made an initial move, tightened into a narrow trading range, then expands back out on volume. Compares how tight the recent range is against the broader range to tell a real contraction from a stock that's simply stalled.

8. Volume Ignition

The catch-all

Checked last, on purpose — the broadest strategy and the one every candidate falls through to if nothing more specific fired first. No resistance level or reference price required: just a genuine surge in volume, combined with rising price above VWAP to rule out a spike that's actually distribution.

How these fit together

Every strategy above shares the same guardrails. Reward and stop-loss sizing come from your own adjustable risk settings, not a number hardcoded into the strategy. Most stops are a flat percentage below entry; VWAP Reclaim, Breakout Pullback and Ignition Pullback anchor to a technical level instead, since the level itself is the trade thesis. Once a strategy triggers, the signal still has to clear a confirmation window and your risk settings before an order is ever placed — see How It Works for the rest of that pipeline.
